3 Idiots

All those of you who are starting to learn guitar and want to practice a simple song like Papa Kehte Hai should rejoice! For this song is based on C major scale with simple C, F and G chords. Still, you should be comfortable with changing chords as changing from C to G is considered to be toughest among the basic open chords. This guide should be useful for the same: 6 Tips on Changing Guitar Chords Effectively.

Give Me Some Sunshine is a beautiful college song which is already a hit amongst youngsters. The song is really pleasing on the ears and once you hear it, you will want to hear it again and again. From the guitarists perspective there are two important things to note here: Firstly, the strumming pattern (given below) is simple for experienced guitarists but might take little practice for novices. Secondly, the chords are regular C, F and G chords but at some places it is advisable to play the barre version rather than normal one. I have mentioned it below.

Also worth noting is how the regular old C, F and G chords have been creatively improvised to derive this wonderful song. A clear reminder that with little improvisation gives a completely different touch to the music.

Here are the strumming patterns used in the song:

Strumming Pattern 1 Strumming Pattern 2
| 1 & 2 & | 3 & 4 & |
| D - D - | D D U D |
| 1 & 2 & | 3e&a4 & |
| D U D - | DUDU- D |

i strongly appreciate your contribution towards guitar. Your blog is superb.
i would like give suggestion that it is still difficult to learn the strumming pattern on a particular song. So, can’t you add the sound record to learn the strumming pattern and further listen to the whole song.

Please, put the distortion part. I’ve got one, but it doesn’t seem to be so tab-to-tab with the original one.

hi i rarely used the net to look for chords, though i m an apperentice, But this one is superb,.
we been bored by the same romantic song, herez tge change, hey guys this song just rocks.

One suggestion in the beggining of songs end the strum by changing from c to f and c to g , and see the effect, just the last stroke

You are right, only the last stroke is where the chord is changed. Post updated!

    Hi Kaustubh,

I usually only posts chords as they can be quickly derived. Notations take a lot of time and am not very comfortable with it. Google for it, you will find it in some time.

Abhi @ Do we have to like strum the whole beats for every chord before the chords change …
    like .. C-Chord – | 1 & 2 & | 3 & 4 & | then .. G-Chord | 1 & 2 & | 3 & 4 & |

    hey!
i would like to ask the same thing what hasan asked.
do we need to change chords after playing the full pattern or in between
cause am trying with full pattern and then change and that ways am not being able to change at the specified time, is it because am playing slow or the chords are changing in between!

  • Abhinav Says January 9th, 2010 4:10 pm

    Good question Hasan & Ankit!

The chords changes after the first bar itself. For e.g. in the below strumming pattern:

    | 1 & 2 & | 3e&a4 & |
    | D U D - | DUDU- D |

The C Chord will be played for the first bar:

    | 1 & 2 & |
    | D U D - |

… and the G chord will be played for the 2nd bar:

    | 3e&a4 & |
    | DUDU- D |

    Hope it’s clear now !

    Hey Abhinav !>
Your work is quite fine but i found sm chord-notations mentioned by u smwhat confusing>
for example i m confused if- “regular c chord” i.e what u have mentioned here is same as c-major chord or sm different CHORD.
and in “KABHI KABHI ADITI” CHORD LESSON OF YOURS U HAVE MENTIONED C-MAJOR CHORD AS ‘Cm’ WHILE MY TEACHER DOESNT TEACHE LIKE THIS>
‘Cm’ IS MENTIONED AS C-MINOR CHORD.
    SO ITS QUITE CONFUSING.
    PLZ REPLY.ME WAITING.

sounds cool…..just a suggestion…in the part where they go “na…na…na na…” and the chorus “give me some sunshine….” if we shift to the G-chord an 8th note before the bar begins it sounds nice…..i mean instead of playing 1 bar of C-maj then 1 bar of G-maj, try 7/8 bar of C-maj followed by 9/8 bar of G-maj….
