Rock On!!

Rock On!!

Rock On released this friday and to everybody’s expectations, the movie rocked the box office. Though the storyline was as obvious as the lyrics of most of the songs, the beauty of this movie was its directness and its simplicity. It managed to touch my heart more than once and then some more. The dialogues of the movie were a fresh breath of air. Oh but I am not here to review the movie!!

I admit I wasn’t excited by the songs during the music release. The lyrics seemed too amusing than amazing. But after seeing the movie and through my lovely friend’s persistence that the songs are good, I ended up enjoying more than I had imagined!

This song can be played on acoustic guitar very well as Arjun Rampal playes it in the movie. (At least he managed to learn the basic chord structures on the guitar!). Farhan Akhtar’s voice is raw but very soothing to the ears.

You can pluck the strings of the chords at the start and later strum the chords. The following strumming pattern can be used: | D- | -D | DUDU |

The song uses basic chords so even if you have just learned chords, you can play this song comfortably.

Cmaj, Amin, Dmin, Gmaj, Fmaj

Tum Ho (C)Toh… Gaata Hai (C)Dil,
Tum Na(Dm)hi… Toh Geet Ka(G)ha…

Some of these are wrong pal…

There is an Em, Bm between the song which you have missed completely.

and by the way woh woh… goes like Gm followed by C NOT C and Am (I had also added the B b on your ” kabhi kabhi Aditi” . You had refused first and then agreed… ;-D )

Let me try and add a rejoinder…

Let’s exchange notes sometime mate. Appreciate your enthu !

    Cheers

Hey Raj, like last time you just mentioned the chords but not the place where it should go… I will have to check before I can say anything. Though the above chords work fine.

hey..tell u what!!its never too late for anything..although u will have trouble learning at an age like that, its still possible..i learnt guitar 4 years ago wen i was 12..if u really want to learn, ur eventually gonna get there..jus buy urself a nice guitar n explore what u can do with it..log on to google n jus search for beginners guitar lessons or sumthn like that..there should be plenty of results..for songs like these u jus need simple guitaring and chords n its not very difficult once u get there..anyways all the best..

    Hey Raj and Pinto!
I checked out both of your listings and both of you have given excellent improvements. I have updated the chords above and am listing the changes here… Do suggest if there are more corrections required.

    (Bb)Tum Ho (Am)Toh Hai,
    Sap(Bm)no Ke Jaisa Ha(Em)sin
    (F)Ek Sa(C)maa…

Bm is a good addition here as suggested by both of you and so is F though it is easy to miss! :)

Jo (G)Tum Ho Toh, Yeh (E)Lagta Hai,
    Ke (Am)Mil Gayi, (F)Har Khushi…
Jo (G)Tum Na Ho, Yeh (E)Lagta Hai,
    Ke (Am)Har Khushi, Me (F)Hai Kami…

Yep, the E sounds better than Dm above.

    (G)Tum Ko Hai Maangati…(G)
    Ye Jinda(C)giiii (Em) iiiii (F) iiii…(C)

I don’t find the second line to be correct… The Em doesn’t sound right there. I think Am is fine.

Same changes for the second stanza as well.

Note: The post has been updated with these changes.

    Hey Valroy,
No age is too late or too early to begin. The best time is now. If you are really passionate about learning guitar or any instrument, then start it! Why wait? Since you have no idea about any instruments, you will have to find a good teacher to get going. Start looking in your area. All the Best! :)

    Hello Annie!
I am glad you like my website. Everyone starts a beginner so keep practising the basic chords and leads as well. Barre chords will come with time. The strumming patterns that I have given are for practice. Usually each song have their own strumming pattern and it has to be deduced by listening to the rhythm. So don’t take that patterns as an exhaustive list for every song.

Let’s hope some easy and good songs come our way. Check this song… Time of Your Life, Greenday it has basic chords.

Hey guys, the confusion can be due to the two versions…one is that farhan’s and other is of Arjun Rampal(ofcourse he dont sing,u can figure it ou in the movie)

    The above is Farhans version
In the second para it goes like This as per Farhan Akhtar on facebook

Tum Ho (C)Toh… Gaata Hai (C)Dil,
    Tum Na(Dm)hi… Toh Geet Ka(G)ha…
Tum Ho (C)Toh… Hai Sab Haa(C)sil,
Tum Na(Dm)hi… Toh Kya Hai Ya(G)ha…
    (Gm)Tum Ho Toh (F)Hai,
    Sap(Bm)no Ke Jaisa Ha(Em)sin
    (F)Ek Sa(C)maa…

    (Gm)Tum Ho Toh (F)Hai,
    Har (Bm)Ek Pal Meher(Em)ban
    (F)Ye Ja(C)haaa…
    Jo (G)Tum Ho Toh, Ha(E7)wa Mein Bhi…
    Mo(Am)habbato… Ka (F)Rang Hai
    Jo (G)Tum Na Ho, Toh (E7)Phir Koyi…
    Na (Am)Josh Na… U(F)mang Hai…
    (G)Tum Mile Toh Mi(G)li
    Yeh Jinda(C)giiii (F) iiiii (Em) iiii… (G)
    (Gm)Woh ho… (A#)Woh ho… (C)Woh ho ho… ho ho… x2

This is the corrects version of Fahan’s version as per him!
    This is not my work
I ve played it and it sounds fine

    About the strumming
    D D DUDUDUD

    Finger picking i dont know..!
    Hope this helps!

    Hi Abhi,

U really have mastered the art of playing guitar. I have started playing guitar recently and find myself amused by it, I can play the tabs perfectly with no problems at all. But again I need to know the tabs before and can’t create by own. I am pathetic at strumming I cannot figure out the strumming patter to any song and feel that I am going to give up soon. can you please suggest me how can I know the strumming and start the basic strumming patter. As I am learning by own. I would need suggestions thanks.

    Arjun

    Hi ,
Your blog/site is very informative for all the guitar learners like me. I just started it out too.
I have few questions. I hope, u could help me out.

    1. I know, by tabs/leads, one could identify the song. But is it possible to recognize the song by just doing strumming. ( without vocalizing words, just strumming).
    2. In movie, “jaane tu yaa jaane naa”, in “nazrein milana” song, you mentioned it uses muted strumming. Could you tell me at what point it does. As I think, strumming changes a lot in the song. Could u tell me the strumming pattern for “dil kee yahi khata hia , dil ko nahin pata hia “? It would be very helpful.
    3. Could u record all those songs, that you mentioned, while playing it with chords and strumming. It would help us to know, how to actually play the song in the right manner.
Hope, I am making sense to you in my questions.

Adding that by just strumming means (playing chords & strumming together)

Waiting for your response, whenever your time permits.

    Hi Sanjay,

    Good questions!

    1. Usually, it is not possible to recognize a song just by its strumming… you need to identify the key of the song and the chords used. But some songs like Papa Kehte Hain have become a standard for certain type of strumming patterns.

    2. When a muted strumming is used, you can identify it by listening to how long the chord rings. If it is like a short jab, you can be sure it is muted. The strumming for Nazrein Milana from JTYJN can be like this: | D- — | DU — | The upstroke can be muted to produce the desired effect.

    3. I have got a lot of requests to put up videos of the songs that I put up here, but to be honest, I am very lazy. Need to work myself up and get this done! Hopefully I will do it soon!

Bb is simply A#… play it the way U play A chord. just move the whole hand 1 fret up and keep ur index finger on the first fret of first string.
